More than a Name
“Baumwall” is a prominent street in the city-centre of Hamburg, Germany following the embankment of the river Elbe.
The name “Baumwall” is reminiscent of the former protective city wall and the barriers erected in the years between 1616 and 1625 guarding the inner city of Hamburg and its port with its visiting trade ships. “Baumwall” as a barrier to protect the ancient port of Hamburg has historically secured the city’s free trade and was the guardian of Hamburg’s gate to the world.
